The Melbourne Silver Mine started out as a small group of friends chatting about the virtues of older cameras, the qualities of different film stocks and the peculiar aroma of developing chemicals. The group grew quickly, and it soon became apparent that the interest and enthusiasm for traditional photographic techniques was wider spread through the photography community than we’d thought.
In November 2007, we staged our first exhibition – the cunningly named “UNSENSORED07″. Many people puzzled over the name, and politely pulled us to one side and told us we had made a spelling error. With some satisfaction we informed them that unlike digital cameras, film cameras do not sport a “sensor” and so… well you get the idea.
The exhibition, featuring twelve of the founding Silver Miners, was a great success, taking many of us by surprise. Hosted at Kerala Gallery in High St Northcote. 300 people joined us for the opening night festivities, and it was a night that many of us will never forget, and that some will never remember.
The enthusiasm for UNSENSORED07 was such that when we announced early in 2008 that we would be staging UNSENSORED08, the response was immediate with dozens of people putting up their hand asking to be included. It was around this time that we decided to make the Melbourne Silver Mine an official entity – so a few votes, a handshake and round of applause later, Melbourne Silver Mine Inc was born.
Unsensored08 opened on Friday August 8th at Collingwood Gallery. A larger venue was required to accommodate 45 works by 30 photographers. We returned to the Collingwood Gallery in 2009 with a show featuring the works of 42 photographers. (are you seeing a trend here?)
The opening night was incredibly well attended, with around 350 people making their way through the doors. The event was a great success, hundreds of people coming to see the show and many new members joining the Melbourne Silver mine.
For many of the participants the Silver Mine’s UNSENSORED show is their first entry into a photographic exhibition, and we at the MSM are enormously proud to be able to help other photographers take their art to another level.
Unsensored10 is set to return to Collingwood Gallery for 2 weeks from Friday August 13, 2010. This year 50 photographers are exhibiting approximately 70 works.
