The Melbourne Silver Mine became an incorporated association in April 2008. As the group is still in its early stages of operation the committee are in the process of developing relationships with other industry companies and institutions.
We do however have certain benefits to offer our members today, with more to come in the near future. These benefits include the following:
- Participation in the annual UNSENSORED exhibition
2013 will deliver the 7th instalment of the UNSENSORED exhibition of analogue photography. The event has grown along with the association itself, moving from 12 photographers in 2007, 30 in 2008 and now capped at 50 photographers since 2009. Membership of Melbourne Silver Mine gives you the opportunity to be a part of the show.
- Regular meetings and events
The Mine organises regular events and meet-ups. These can be social, technical or (as we tend to prefer) a combination of the two. An example of one of our more adventurous meets was the DIY film developing in the park BBQ.
- The opportunity to participate in group orders of film and equipment
The Silver Mine regularly coordinates orders on behalf of its members from overseas equipment suppliers. Membership gives you the opportunity to join in on these orders, by pooling resources freight costs are minimised and you can get access to a wider range of products than you can normally find locally.
- The opportunity to share knowledge, information and gear
Melbourne Silver Mine members have a great deal of experience with a wide range of cameras and photographic techniques. Our regular meetups and online forum give you an opportunity to discuss any issues or ideas you have with your fellow members. Getting your hands on a piece of kit that you have been lusting over for what seems like years is also quite possible.
- The opportunity to have your ideas supported by the Silver Mine
The Melbourne Silver Mine committee is always on the lookout for ideas and projects that promote traditional photographic techniques. Members are welcome to put forward suggestions for exhibitions, events or other opportunities that help achieve the group’s goals.
The common factor in all these benefits is the chance to share knowledge and benefit from the experience of all the members in the group. Whether you are interested in a particular technique, want to get more people to see your work, or simply want to interact with people who like to take photographs with analogue gear, being a member of the mine can help make this happen.
Your membership fees are used solely to meet the group’s purposes, no committee member takes a fee for their involvement with the group, all monies received by the association go back into projects that all members are able to take part in.
