Pinhole photography is photography without a lens. The image is taken through a small opening in a light sealed container where it is then captured on film or light sensitive paper. Simple blocking of the light by hand will act as the shutter mechanism.
By varying the distance between the pinhole and the film, different angles of view can be obtained and by enlarging the pinhole above the recommended size, the image can be made less sharp.
The exposure is calculated beforehand, taking into account the aperture, light sensitivity of the film and light conditions.
Anything from a tin can to a truck has been used as a pinhole camera, or an existing camera can be turned into a pinhole by removing the lens.
Thomas Bachler of Germany made pinhole images by placing film in his mouth and forming his lips into a pinhole.
Pinhole photos often have a beautiful, dreamy and soft look to them and recall the look of very old photography as it is indeed a historic technique.
