It’s high time we had a social gathering, so, a photo walk followed by some drinks are planned for Sunday 31st May.
Meet at 11am at the corner of Smith Street & Victoria Parade, Collingwood (next to McDonalds) (map)
After shooting we’re off for drinks and snacks @ Kent Street, 201 Smith Street Fitzroy (from approx. 1pm)
Help us capture a typical Smith Street Sunday: show us the history, the people, the textures and juxtapositions of one of Melbourne’s most colourful strips.
An exhibition of our day on Smith Street will be arranged for MSM members later in the year.
The notorious no.86 tram rambles it’s way down Smith Street, passing boutique fashion outlets crammed next to dusty old junk shops. Art Galleries and gourmet restaurants share street space with $2 shops, grungy pubs and the ever eventful Smith Street Safeway. Hip trendsetters mix with the socially disadvantaged, while bargain hunting outer suburbanites flock to the factory outlets. The Police question a man drinking from a brown paper bag while a dreadlocked hippy couple smoke herbal cigarettes and sip soy dandelion coffees.
